Fixed Wing Circuit Procedures

Full details of the operation and management of air traffic within the Redhill Aerodrome Traffic Zone (ATZ) and Local Flying Area (LFA) are set out in the Redhill MATS - Part 2 and UK AIP pages AD 2 - EGKR 1-1 to AD 2 - EGKR 4-1.
Due to the interaction of the Gatwick CTR and CTA, Class D airspace, with the Redhill ATZ specific arrival and departure routings are operated. Compliance with these procedures is mandatory.

Normally all aircraft must operate according to Visual Fight Rules (VFR) relating to Class D airspace, fixed-wing aircraft must have a minimum flight visibility of 3000m and remain clear of cloud and in sight of the surface, helicopters are required to remain clear of cloud and in sight of the surface. Any flights operating under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) will be subject to co-ordination with Gatwick ATC.

Circuit Patterns

Fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters operate two completely separate circuit patterns.
Fixed-wing circuits are flown to the north of the aerodrome when Runway 08/26 is in use with the helicopters flying to the south, when Runway 18/36 is in use the fixed-wing circuit is flown to the east of the aerodrome and the helicopters fly to the west. All aircraft flying circuits must remain within the Redhill ATZ.
On Runway 08/26 fixed-wing will fly the crosswind/baseleg over the middle of Benting Wood and between the M23 and the Outwood Road. Avoid overflying the middle of South Nutfield and Henhaw Farm. On Runway 01 the baseleg turn must be made immediately on passing Burstow Park Farm. On Runway 19 the crosswind turn must be made on crossing Axes Lane. The crosswind/baselegs must be flown parallel with 08/26.
See arrival and departure charts in the Fixed Wing Procedures PDF for the correct routings. Helicopter circuits are flown to two heli-strips, H01/H19 and H08/H26, these are separated from the fixed-wing runways and operate independently.

Circuit heights and restrictions

The circuit height for fixed wing and helicopters is 1,000ft QFE day and night. The minimum meteorological visibility for fixed-wing circuits is 5000m and a cloud ceiling of 1300ft. The minimum meteorological visibility for helicopter circuits is 2000m and a cloud ceiling of 500ft.

Helicopter Operations

All helicopter operations at Redhill will be conducted in accordance with the procedures set out in this document and the Redhill ATC Manual of Air Traffic Services Part 2. These procedures are based on ICAO Annex 14 Volume 2 - Heliports.
ICAO divides helicopters into groups according to their MAUW. A list of helicopters, their wake turbulence classification together with the dimensions of the largest helicopter in each group is set out below.
Note: the concrete pads used by EBG and London Helicopter Centres may not provide the ICAO specified separation from obstacles or parked aircraft outside the hangars. Pilots must exercise caution when using these pads.

Air Taxi Routes

All helicopters air taxiing from EBG or London Helicopters will use Runway 18/36 as an air taxi route. There is insufficient distance available to separate two air taxiing helicopters from each other and parked aircraft.

Pilots are to ensure that a distance of 2 x D is provided between air taxiing helicopters and parked/taxiing fixed-wing and 4 x D between two air taxiing or hovering helicopters.

Helicopters parked northside of the Tower are to ensure that they remain north of the entrance road to the Terminal Building car park when routing between the parking area and Runway 18/36.

Helicopters air-taxiing will comply with the definition set out in ICAO Annex 14 Volume 2 - Heliports, not above 100ft and a ground speed not greater than 20kts.

Redhill Aerodrome Helistrips

Two heli-strips (170m x 20m) are marked on the Aerodrome, one parallel and to the south of Runway 08R/26L and another parallel and to the west of Runway 18/36.
These helistrips may only be used by Group 1 helicopters up to a maximum overall length of 13m.
Outbound helicopters should, on receipt of ATC instructions airtaxi to the appropriate aiming point for departure. On final approach let down to the at the Threshold (downwind end).
DO NOT LAND ON THE HELISTRIP

If remaining in the circuit move forward to the aiming and when cleared depart into the circuit.
Helicopters training in the circuit must avoid loitering on the helistrips, move promptly from the H to the aiming point.
Whenever possible taxi to/from the helistrips at 90°. Helicopters may airtaxi directly to the aiming point even with traffic on final to the H.
See the next section for helicopters having an overall length in excess of 13m.

Aerodrome Procedures

Two heli-strips are marked on the Aerodrome, one parallel and to the south of Runway 08R/26L and another parallel and to the west of Runway 18/36. These helistrips may only be used by Group 1 helicopters. Group 2 helicopters will operate to the Southern Hover Square when Runway 08/26 is in use and to the 08L numbers when Runway 18/36 is in use. Group 3 helicopters will always use the runway in use for their arrival and departure; with ATC providing the necessary vortex wake spacing.
There are four areas available for practice autorotation/engine-off landings. These are south of Runway 08R/26L and are designated Areas One, Two, Three and Four. Area One is the eastern most area and Area Four is the western most area. When Runway 18/36 is in use only Areas Three and Four are available and, in order to avoid infringing the fixed-wing runway, helicopters must remain west of an imaginary line parallel with the runway from Pad 11 to Taxiway Delta.
Only one helicopter is permitted to carry-out autorotation or engine-off approaches to a particular area at anyone time. If a pilot is unable to complete an approach in to the nominated area a go-around must be made.
Note: helicopters are not to conduct hovering exercises in these areas, marked hover squares are provided for this purpose. It is dangerous for helicopters to loiter in the engine-off practice areas.

Strict circuit discipline is required for the safe operation of helicopters during periods when passive RTF procedures are in use.
Pilots carrying out quick stops, downwind circuits etc. are to switch on their landing lights to improve their conspicuity.

Additionally there are twelve other areas around the Aerodrome where helicopters may operate to and from, these are listed below:
a) Northern Hover Square
b) Eastern Hover Square
c) South-east Sloping Ground
d) South-east Confined Area
e) Southern Hover Square
f) Hover circle
g) Southern Confined Area
h) South-west Confined Area
i) South-west sloping ground
j) Area South (south of Taxiway C/D)
k) Area West (west of Taxiway D)
l) Western Hover Square

With the exception of the South-west Sloping Ground, which is divided by a small hedge and may be used by two helicopters, only one helicopter at a time is permitted in any of the above areas.
All of the above areas including the heli-strips are only available for use during daylight hours. After sunset, helicopters are only permitted to operate to/from Runway 08R/26L, which is equipped with runway lighting.

RTF Procedures

A semi-passive R/T system is operated within the helicopter circuit area provided that the meteorological visibility is greater than 4000m.
Helicopter pilots will request clearance for each departure into the circuit pattern. Downwind and final calls will not normally be required, but pilots must monitor the Aerodrome Control frequency. Helicopters working confined areas will report downwind for and departing from the area they are using. When complete this information will be included in the final departing call. Downwind calls will be made for all autorotation/engine-off landings, the intended area to be used will be included in this call. Pilots will report going around from an autorotation.

If the Aerodrome Controller cannot maintain visual contact with helicopters operating in the visual circuit, or the meteorological visibility is 4000m or less, the number of helicopters operating within the ATZ will be restricted and standard R/T procedures will be enforced.
At night standard R/T procedures will apply.
Unless using a company callsign helicopter pilots will use the last two letters of their registration prefixed with "Helicopter".

Listed below are some examples of R/T calls to be used at Redhill:
"Redhill Tower Helicopter (registration) local/land away*" *as appropriate
"Redhill Tower Helicopter ____ (type) request lift (number) on board airfield training." or:
"Redhill Tower Helicopter _____ (type) request lift (number) on board for (destination)."
"Tower Helicopter (last two letters of registration) downwind autorotation area (number)."
"Tower Helicopter (last two letters of registration) downwind low-level ______ confined area."
"Tower Helicopter (last two letters of registration) departing [and complete] ______ confined area."

ATC will clear helicopters to leave the ATZ via a VRP using the phrase " (callsign) leave via (VRP) VFR." This means leave via the designated VRP at 1,200ft QNH.
ATC may clear helicopters to enter the ATZ using the phrase "join approved." This means route from the VRP onto the downwind leg or final approach as appropriate.
